Happy Thursday!

Well, the week is coming to a close. This week I am thankful for growth, you know personal growth. I learn more and more as I get older. About myself, people, life. As I get older, I began to realize what is important in life. The realization that things and people change and goals take on a different shape are more of a relief now than they are scary to me.

I used to always say it’s no way I could have a child, I am just not mother material. I actually had an old boyfriend tell me that. His words were “you won’t have children, your all about you” I am paraphrasing, but you get the point. The truth was we were way too young to be talking about kids anyway and he was right. It’s amazing though how the things you expect to be important to you your whole life take a backseat when you bring a little one into the world. There is absolutely nothing I wouldn’t do for my son and suddenly everything that was “about me” before, doesn’t exist. Not that I don’t care about myself  or want to take care of myself, just that everything I do now revolves about him, his needs/wants and believe it or not, I’m okay with that.

I met my husband my senior year in high school, and I think we both thought at the time we were just having fun, hanging out. Both young and ambitious about how much fun we could have with the freedom college provided. Through college I saw myself began to grow by living outside of the box. My thinking became broader and neutral. I met so many acquaintances, many of whom became long time friends of mine. College provided a different outlook on life, not because of classes (not that they didn’t help) but because of the people I met, the freedom it provided and the limitless responsibilities I began to take on.

Now, at 30 years old I am slowly realizing that I am still learning, growing. I am still struggling to figure out exactly what it is I am meant to do in this world. Although I have a very good idea lately of what that is. When I am sad, I write. When I am happy, I write. When I am inspired, I write. I have always wanted to write, but I was afraid of letting my thoughts be heard. There is something so personal about writing, so honest and real. This blog was something I would have never done at 18 or 25 for that matter. Through growth I have become somewhat fearless and man do I love it! Personal growth is something I think we all go through everyday, it’s when you embrace it and began to appreciate it that this thing called life gets a little easier. That’s how I see at it anyway 🙂

Teach Me Tuesday

Teach-Me

Hey Hey!!!

Happy Tuesday People! The monthly TMT is on, and I decided since its Black History month I would fill this post with many thanks to the men and women who fought for many African-Americans rights. This will not be so much a Teach Me Tuesday, but a reminder of what those have done before myself to not only pave an easier path for us today but providing better opportunities today. So here goes!

Rosaparks.jpgRosa Parks

As if I really need to explain any further. Her name says it all. As a child my mother would always use the saying a wise man keeps his mouth shut. I think of Rosa Parks when I think of this saying. She made history without saying a word. She sat in silence and let her body language do all the talking. The epitome of both power and poise.

Phillis Wheatley

Phillis Wheatley, the first African-American poet and to publish a novel. Born in 1753 into slavery, at the age of was sold to a John Wheatley whose family provided her with an education that was not very likely for most african americans in slavery. By twelve she as reading greek and latin, these works inspired her own work. She is known for her work poems on various subjects. She went to court in 1772 to defend her work, because many white people could not believe she wrote such amazing literature on her own. She was praised by George Washington and the infamous Jupiter Hammon (another african american poet) recognized her work in his own writing. If you haven’t heard of Ms. Wheatley or ever read any of her work, you can buy it here. I love to write and have had a bit of anxiety about putting my poetry online lately. Hearing her story of how she had to fight to prove her work definitely puts my anxiety in check. Thank you for the inspiration Wheatley, I will never doubt myself again.

Martin Luther King Jr.

Mr. King believed in peace, unity and love. What more is there to say. He is infamous for so many things. The most popular being the dream he spoke into existence. He believed in using his words as weapons. His words will forever be remembered, and his actions will forever be honored.

These are only a few from a list of honorable first in african american history. If you are interested in learning about the first flack doctor, lawyer, or elected official click here. As I read the list I humbled myself. I felt both proud and great honor.

Happy Black History Month!

Happy Thursday!

Late…. I know sooooo late. On the bright side Thankful Thursday is up!

Devotion -Profound dedication. Earnest attachment to a cause, person, assignment or purpose. This week I am thankful for devotion. I love to see things through. When I start something I like to know it is completed and as close to perfection as possible. I will become strangely devoted to almost any task I set my mind on. The harder the task the greater sense of accomplishment. When I was a little girl I used to give up way too easily. I don’t know what clicked later on to change my mindset, but whatever it was I sure am thankful for that moment.

I have a small example of how devoted I become. I recently started listening to podcast and I came across an interesting one called “Serial” if you have not heard of it please do yourself a favor and download the podcast app, search and subscribe to this podcast. It is a very interesting and intriguing listen. I guess this is what got me thinking about how I can become so devoted I become obsessed with seeing it through.  Saying as little as I possibly can about the podcast it is a true story, it centers around high school students, where a teenage girl loses her life and the hunt for her killer is both perplexing and frustrating. I listened to this podcast all the way until the end and became so passionate I went researching online afterwards to find out more. Most people would just accept the end for what it was, but not me. I needed more and if you’re curious I am still researching lol (listen to the podcast you will understand believe me). I do this with anything, a task, my family, good friendships I want to last and yes even a To-do list.

What are you thankful for this Thursday? I hope you all are having a fantastic week! Stay Inspired!

This post may be a little everywhere today because I am touching on a few things all under the same topic. Just bare with me as I struggle to find the right words.

Hey Hey!

Happy Thursday! This week I am thankful for life. Even though it can throw some sharp curves at you life is more than just going through the motions. I have watched things happen to people I love and seen friends experience the worst, I have even had things happen to me, things said about me and people take advantage of me. All the same I am extremely grateful for the things I have seen both good and bad, because all that does is teach me to be stronger than I was the day before. I am slowly learning that sometimes you get out of life what you put into it. If you constantly think negatively, you will only get negativity back. Yes, sometimes bad things happen to good people, but I believe if those people can look pass the current situation and see that there is a solution at the end their journey; they would know that even when you want to stop climbing the mountain of frustration determination and willpower will get you closer to the solution.

Life-Quotes-25-394x300

Life is one huge roller coaster. Some people will get on with you for a little while and then step off at the slightest hiccup. Others will stick with you through the loopty loos and stomach turning spins. I live my life as freely as I can. I try to limit the boundaries because sometimes boundaries are meant to be overstepped. Life with all its twist and turns is our story. You can choose to write and narrate your journey, or you can simply hand it over to someone else and let them dictate who you are and what you are supposed to be doing.

7-rules-of-life-quotes-sayings-pictures

I guess my point is never under any circumstances let people/situations get you to a point where you are ready to give up on yourself. People will say things sometimes to be rude or hurt your feelings. Sometimes people don’t even know that they are projecting how they feel about themselves on you. Instead of letting those words/situation get you down, use them as inspiration/ motivation to better yourself. It does not matter if they are true or said out of anger. Continue to be true to who you are. Life was given to us in such a beautiful way. Somethings within the life we are given are not as beautiful as we would like them to be, but know that not everything starts off as beautiful. Beauty takes time, patience and a lot of hard work. Life may not always be perfect, but it always has the potential to be beautiful.

DIY Batman Costume

Hey Hey!

This friday is Halloween! Husby and I decided to dress baby pie up for his first Halloween. My husband is a big Batman, Superman, Spiderman….. well lets just say he loves comics and in his absolute admiration for the comic world he has recruited me. Needless to say baby pie had to be a superhero for his first Halloween. Batman it is! I had so much fun making his costume. I found a great DIY tutorial on Pinterest and added my own details.. You can see it here. This site is great. I was instantly inspired to try my hand at baby batman. I must say I have a long way to go in sewing, as the tutorial above was sewn perfectly, but it will do for one night. Take a look at what I did below.

Items Needed:

  • Two Onesies (desired colors) one clearance for $3.50 and $5 at Target
  • fabric (I purchased yellow and blue one yard each)$4.46
  • Scissors
  • Craft Glue $3.89 at Wal-Mart.
  • leggings (I couldn’t find any so I used some pants I already owned)
  • Black felt ( $0.23 at Wal-Mart)
  • Parchment paper
  • Marker
  • Some batman socks (gift from a good friend)

All the items needed.

Turn both pieces inside out and sew!

Next the belt. I just measured the yellow fabric from one side of the onesie to the other as you see above.

Cut a strip from the half you cut. The width is up to you. I cut my belt a little thick and made adjustments later if needed.

Now to the cape! I actually wanted to say to the batmobile! but that wouldn't have made any sense. I am so corny :)

Now to the cape! I just felt a strong urge to say “To the bat mobile!” but that wouldn’t have made any sense. I am so corny 🙂 Fold your material over and over until you have no more to fold.

After folding your choice of material. Cut triangular patterns out of the end of the fabric.

Should look like this once you unroll.

Sew the cape to the neckline of the onesie. If you aren't that good at sewing and would rather hide your stitch (like me) or you used white thread because you couldn't find blue and didn't want to go out and buy any (like me) leave some fabric at the top of your stitch to fold over.

This is where the craft glue came in handy. Apply the glue and lay the extra fabric on top.

That's all that's to it. Add some leggings or pants. You've got your very own little superhero ;)
